Category 1
Water intrusion from a clean source with no substantial risk of causing sickness or discomfort.
Example:
- Fresh water supply line (broken pipe)
- Tub or Sink overflow
- Appliance malfunction (that involve water supply lines)
Affected materials such as furniture, clothes, toys, etc. can be dried in place. However, carpet and pad does not need to be replaced, only water sensitive materials will need to be removed. Laminated floors (vinyl) will need to be removed to dry the base floor. Category 1 water intrusion will escalate to a category 2 and 3 if not promptly and properly tended to as it mixes with soils on or within floor coverings or building assemblies (walls, decking, subflooring).
Category 2
Water that has a significant degree of chemical, biological and/or physical contamination.
Example:
- Category 1 water loss left unattended
- Aquarium leak
- Toilet bowl overflow (urine only)
- Dishwasher discharge
- Clothes washer discharge
- Hydrostatic pressure
Some porous materials will need to be removed (carpet pad) if saving carpet. However, the carpet needs to be thoroughly cleaned and decontaminated. Floors and other dryable materials will need to be cleaned with antimicrobial solutions before the drying process can begin. The use of an air cleaner may be used for odor control and air purification (air scrubber).
Category 3
Water intrusion from a grossly unsanitary source that carries disease causing agents.
Example:
- Discharge from toilet (other then urine)
- Waste from main sewer line
- Septic back up
- Rain water/flooding (that has traveled through outdoor ground)
Cleaning and decontamination procedures are a must. However, all affected materials must be removed and safely disposed of. This may include but not limited to carpet, carpet padding, baseboards, wall board (dry wall), sub floors (depending on material or component), laminated floor and insulation.
